The DocuLynx Surfboard

Customers visiting our corporate headquarters might be surprised to find a mounted surfboard at the entrance. But this surfboard, backed by its story and legendary maker, is the perfect way to greet our guests. Not only does it capture the spirit of the place where our company began, but it also embodies our passion for excellence and fun, friendly service.

The story of the surfboard begins in 2003, when software developer Information Management Research (IMR) sold Mercury Software to a Santa Ana, California-based company to archive and distribute electronic images of its print files. That company, Financial Statement Services (FSSI), is one of the largest privately held providers of statement services in North America. At the time it had a fun and interesting cast of characters working in its data center, and back then implementation of Mercury Software took days, not hours like it does today. During the implementation process, the FSSI and IMR teams became friends and enjoyed each other's company after work hours.

During one of the off-site after-work get-togethers, the topic of surfing arose. To the FSSI crew, Southern California and surfing are synonymous with each other. And for then IMR employees Mike Johnson and Terry Wieczorek - who would go on and found DocuLynx a year later - surfing was also a topic of interest. During the many conversations between the two teams, Mike and Terry learned the father of FSSI Information Technology Manager Brad Holden shaped surfboards for a living. Indeed, Bill Holden, was the first inductee into the Surfboard Builders Hall of Fame in 2000.

As Mike and Terry created their new company, DocuLynx, the story of Bill Holden struck a chord. In addition, the original home of DocuLynx was Pismo Beach, California, which is known for two things: surfing and clams. Being that a clam theme just wasn't very cool, it was the image of the DocuLynx logo placed in the middle of a custom-shaped Holden surfboard that became a passion for Mike and Terry.

But there was one huge problem - Bill Holden did not shape boards for commercial signage. He was old school, shaping boards for serious surfers. Undeterred, Mike and Terry pursued their passion. Armed with enough Tequila - sipped not slammed - they convinced Holden to shape the first DocuLynx surfboard for the young company's Pismo Beach location. The finished product was an 8-foot surfboard with the DocuLynx logo airbrushed in the center and the Holden logo and trademark wood tips finishing the design. Today, it's mounted in the entrance of the DocuLynx corporate headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska.

A second DocuLynx surfboard was in the midst of being shaped by the Master Shaper when he passed away on Super Bowl Sunday in January, 2007. The second board is now being finished by son Brad Holden.

On May 28, 2008, the Holden family held a "paddle out" in two locations simultaneously, in Orange County and Hawaii. Terry, a non-swimmer, non-surfer and afraid-of-the-ocean guy, represented DocuLynx and paddled out seemingly for miles with a flask of tequila in his back pocket. He and the others celebrated with a toast to Bill Holden. Immediately following the release of Bill's ashes, the ocean started to produce 4-foot waves. Everyone but Terry surfed back. Terry paddled back.
